"What did you see?" – ABC

***5/6/09 New Week, New LOST => New Commercial. Blogged a little about it here.***

Is there a new viral campaign possible Alternate Reality Game (ARG) being launched by ABC?

During each of the commercial breaks during LOST, there was moment of black screen with one small portion as a picture, followed by the words “What did you see?” What ever this is, we know it was brought by ABC because of the logo on the lower right of the screen.

Is this directly related to LOST? I had ABC on after the show and the commercials stopped, so I would guess that it is.

After a little sniffing around online, I found a blog Magnificent Vista with some addition information.

Basically during and shortly after LOST, if you googled “a site went up, the mosaic collective, and was found via google. Now, you cannot find it by googling, except to blogs. Anyway – if its the start of a new ARG, I would welcome that. The season 5 finale is only two weeks away.

Last year, Octagon Recruiting was launched during the finale. I, Debra – “workwoman, bricklayer in the Dharma initiative,” can only hope that a new ARG is being rolled out.

UPDATE #1: in the last few moments, there is some new info which says it might be a viral campaign for a new show and not LOST related. We’ll see. ****shoot. looks like a false alarm.

UPDATE #2: See the video clips here.

Ha Ha Ha

I was supposed to be asleep hours ago BUT the coolest thing happened. Remember when I explained what ARG’s are? (fun with ARG’s) Well tonight was the big payoff.

Two nights ago, the ARG for The Dark Knight had a live gathering in both Chicago and New York City. A Bat Signal appeared on a building in each of the cities. Tonight (corresponding with some other online activities) the bat signal was Jokerized. All of the Gotham sites were jokerized as well, which lead to a puzzle. The puzzle then pointed the way to…

FREE ADVANCED SCREENING IMAX TICKETS!!!!!!!!

So Tuesday night I am heading into Dallas with friends (it worked out amazingly that a friend from work and his girlfriend were also able to get tickets) to see an advanced screening of the Dark Knight. From seeing Gotham a year ago to this, such a fun ride!

I got involved with the ARG because I like batman and I was hoping to get a copy of the Gotham Times. This is way better!
And I am so excited I can’t sleep!

I'm reading

Currently I am reading “Grapes of Wrath” by John Steinbeck. It’s a bit depressing (duh, its set in the ‘depression’) and it REALLY makes me hope this current recession does not turn into a depression.

After this, I think I am going to read “Ender’s Game.” I have been told I would like it. It guess its sci-fi. We’ll see.

I stopped by my old work on Friday. Turned in my aprons, got my last pay check and picked up my last tips. I am so encouraged that I love my new job. The people I work with are fantastic and I really hope that my small little contributions will be valuable and helpful. I finally have “it’s” vs. “its” down! I think I need to go back and re-read all of my past blog entries and find all the the grammatical errors. Just kidding! (I have been told I have Obsessive Compulsive tendencies and I can see why that comment would be made. To a very small degree, it worries me that I might become one of those people who go crazy when people use incorrect grammar. I hope not.)

Other than that. I have been keeping up with the Dark Knight ARG. To my totally sadness, I did not receive a Gotham Times in the mail. 😦 I thought that I would because I voted in the Gotham Election, but I guess I was wrong. Good news though, Harvey Dent won by a landslide! (Do you have comcast????? I hear that they are advertising for “Gotham Tonight.” If you have seen these commercials, that the ARG has come to you.)

Harvey Dent for DA (or fun with ARGs)

Who is Harvey Dent? What is an ARG? Glad you asked those questions.

Harvey Dent recently ran for District Attorney for Gotham City. The Election was held this week and Mr. Dent won by a landslide! (you can see his Website Click here)

What you say? Gotham City is not a real place? I beg to differ. Check out these photos from the last time I was in Gotham.

A Gotham cab

Looks like they may be having some issues with Crime these days in Gotham. There were several SWAT trucks and police cars out the day I was there

Rumor has it that there is a man running around Gotham (quite possibly the owner of the truck in this photo) who dresses up like a clown. I am not 100% sure about that, but I guess this particular day must have been garbage day.

(you can also see my previous gotham posts here , here and here)

Why do I say all this? And are you still wondering what an ARG is? Well let me explain. ARG stands for Alternative Reality Game. In short it is a game that combines the web, viral marketing, puzzles and occasionally (as in the case of the Dark Knight) real live participatory events.

The idea is 1. to produce a viral media/marketing campaign for whatever product is being sold and 2. to give a fun activity, which often fills in the back-story of a movie or tv show, for the fans to get involved with. In this case, there have been online puzzles and scavenger hunts all to give Gotham a seemingly real feel. The “prizes” for events and puzzles are often a sneak peak at trailers or pictures before the rest of the world sees them. This particular ARG contains a police department, a bank, a couple of restaurants, The Gotham Times, and sites pertaining to the election just to name a few. Because I registered and voted on monday at the GothamElectionBoard, I now have a Gotham Address. Its all just a bit of fun.

The real thing that got me curious about ARGs is the Octagon Global Recruiting ad and website for LOST. Apparently there were two ARGs between season fleshing out some of the LOST story line that the show would never have time to cover. Again, it adds to the Myth, gives weight to the Epic (and helps uber-fans make it through the summer and fall until the show returns in January).

So its all in good fun. And let me give you a heads up. If you like Batman, and you like dominos pizza, you may just want to order the “gotham special” on Monday. Trust me, it will be worth it. (Just spreading some of the GothamCityPizzeria love that I learned while in my alternate universe today)

Too much fun

So now I have to wait with everyone else until next January. So, did you watch? If so, did you catch it? Thanks to some live tv rewinding I did 🙂

It was the oddity of placement. That and a particular shape made me think …wait a minute… Octagon Global Recruiting Ah Yeah. If you don’t know what I am talking about, thats ok. I am guessing if you don’t – you don’t watch LOST. Its like a big mystery game.

“www.octagonglobalrecruiting.com”. Its sponsored by the Dharma Initiative and rumor has it that the dates listed are the same time Comic-Con is in San Diego.

***Update. It turns out, if you post something about a VERY popular tv show right after the finale airs, you get a much higher hit count on your web site. In the last hour, my blog received more traffic than it typically does and the majority of the visits were from eastern and central time zones. Mountain & Pacific are still watching. Anyway, I just found it interesting.
