the constaints of language

I was trying to fall asleep and not able to. I had a headache this weekend, so I don’t know if my extra sleeping (while waiting for medicine to kick in) has thrown off my sleeping pattern. Probably, and I will regret it tomorrow morning.

Anyway, while I lay here awake, I was thinking about how language is actually a prison in which thoughts and ideas are bound and held captive. Many times we are left “speechless” because the ideas or thoughts contained in our heads are impossible to stuff into the simple words that we use to communicate. Music and art have an ability to communicate beyond what language can do. I wonder if societies that do not have written language are able to communicate better. Or at least communicate that which is abstract, better.

Or what about illiterate societies? I am thinking of in the Middle ages when peasants could not read. Their “bible” was the liturgy of the church, the stories on the stain glass windows, or the paintings on the cathedral walls. Maybe understanding God’s love in not at all a concrete idea, but an abstract experience and therefore understood and communicated perhaps better without the use of language.

If this is true with understanding God, and God created everything else that exists, all that we experience with our senses, all that we perceive and attempt to understand, then perhaps language is only a small tool in understanding and communicating. Reason and Logic are specific, concrete frameworks that fit within the realm of the usefulness of language. BUT could it not be argued that while creation contains a certain amount of logic, God is so much larger and more incredible than we can comprehend, therefore even in his creation, there is more that is incomprehensible then there is understandable. Which would then make me think that the scales of reality tip toward the concept that more things exist that are outside the realm of language. Does that make sense? Meaning that which exists in a neat and tidy, logical box and is able to be discussed with language, is less then the amount of that which exists and is unable to be capture in language.

At the same time, I cannot think of how I could discuss this very idea of language being restricting without using language.

Well, now that I have typed this out, I might be able to go to sleep.

Its too Early

Its about 6:30 in the morning. I have already been awake for about 30 minutes, but my alarm is about to go off which means I Need to get going on the day. I am enjoying my summer job at the Finaid office. Great people to work with. Its just that I am so not a morning person! And I hate it when I wake up too early and my mind turns on so I cannot fall back a sleep. See what I mean? I think too much.

Please Pray

If you happen to be reading this today, your prayers would be greatly appreciated. It is 1:30 am and I am supposed to be fast asleep. Later today (I am planning on getting up at 5:45 am) my roommates and I are moving. In addition to that, I have a very important phone call happening in the evening. Probably not the best activity on a day that I will be very tired, but your prayers are requested.

Regarding moving, Please pray that we have enough helpers show up and that it goes quick and smoothly. And that after moving, my roomies and I have the energy to clean our current home.

Second, please pray that I will have strength and energy for the phone call. That the conversation would be pleasing to the Lord and that any confusion would be avoided. Clear communication is a necessity in this case.

Thanks, And now I am off to hopefully fall asleep. (the anticipation of the phone call is keeping me awake).

Great Show

I got back from the Shane & Shane concert about an hour and a half ago. WOW! It was fantastic. If you are not familiar with Shane & Shane, they are an acoustic duo that plays upbeat/rockish music, most of which is worship music. It was just a wonderful evening of worshiping God while being challenged and encouraged.

I would be remiss if I did not also mention the pleasant surprise of the evening, a man named Phil Wickham. This guy’s voice is incredible!!!! (a mix of K-max, Bono, and Rufus Wainright) And his music is quite powerful as well. Someday when I have some spare money, his cd is the next I am going to purchase.

Ok, well my eyes are pretty shot, so I heading to bed.

can't sleep

Hey, Check it out. Switchfoot’s new cd is number 3 on the top albums that are being sold on itunes. Right above The Fray. Both very good cds.

Interestingly enough though, it might be selling well, but not one person has written a review for “Oh! Gravity.” The more I hear it, the more I love it.

Ok, now that it is almost 2 am, I should seriously try to sleep.

As a side note, today (or rather yesterday) was very productive. I bought all of my textbooks and even read one entire “course assigned readings” This is a packet of articles that the professor wants to have as assigned reading so they make a ton of photocopies, put them in a little book and then charge between 4 to 13 or so dollars at the book store (to cover paper and copying fees). I will try and read another one tomorrow. (or, today I guess) that will be a great start on my “I am going to do my homework with less procrastination” goal.

ok, seriously…off to sleep I go.

Merry Christmas!

The family just finished opening all of our gifts! (Yes, we realize it is only the 23rd) In order to have everyone present, and avoid the business of tomorrow being Sunday, we opted to open gifts tonight.

The last week has been very relaxing. A bit of book reading (fun books), listening to music, hanging out with my nieces, watching movies, and sleeping. (oh, and just took a break from blogging to dance with the neices to Audio A “Big House”)

Tomorrow, GO HAWKS!

School Update

Remember that list of assignments I was working on? Especially the two with “pretend” due dates? Well items 1-4 have now been completed and turned in, BUT the two with pretend due dates did not get done before thanksgiving. (The procrastination monster got the best of me.) I got the research done for the large paper that I wrote on Saint Francis, yet I could not get myself to actually write the paper before I went to Dallas. In the end, it worked out ok. I wrote the paper this past Wednesday and it was due Thursday. So those who called me a “keener” [and you know who you are 😉 ] may need to rethink that label.

This morning I have the first page of my last essay due. I could not get myself to write it yesterday, too many other better things to do. One thing, I should note, is Watch the Seahawks WIN! So this morning I got up early and wrote the one page. Now I find myself with an hour where I could have been sleeping, but to fall back a sleep is probably impossible….oh well.

I did find out that one of my finals is canceled and that I got a good grade on my Luther paper. Both of those things were very encouraging.

Hey its only about 9 degrees out right now (-3 with windchill). I am loving the cold. Yes, it is a little annoying, but it is also very refreshing and invigorating. ok, off I go to figure out what to do with this extra hour in my day.

Good Morning World

Well, here it is 15 minutes to 6, and I have yet to fall asleep! (and I am not even intentionally pulling an all-nighter).

During my few days off from school, I am trying to get this book read. It is about 500 pages and it is an biography of John Brown. Well yesterday I had a goal of reading 140 pages. I put it off until the end of the day, so despite my tiredness, I stayed up until about 1 am to finish.

Well that was all find and dandy until I turned the light off to go to sleep. Whoops, I had coffee this evening so right as I try to sleep, my brain turns on and I can’t stop thinking. Even though I don’t have class today (Monday), I am meeting my roommate and her family for breakfast at 9. SO, I have limited time to sleep. Never good, counting down the amount of time left to sleep when you are trying to fall asleep.

So as time ticked away, at three, I considered reading more of my book. I opted to listen to some music on my ipod instead. No good. By 4:45, I decided to try and read my book and hopefully make my eyes tired. Well, I succeeded in having tired eyes, yet I am very awake. So the new plan is to keep reading until I my alarm goes off. Continue with my day as if I had a great nights sleep, go to breakfast, then come home and take a nap.

Originally, I planned on going to a coffee shop to read my book. Not going to happen. The last thing I need is more coffee. 🙂

At least later this afternoon, I will have less pages to read to finish the book. I am at 333 right now. If I can get to even 360 or so, that leaves me less than 150 for the afternoon. Totally do-able.

I was looking forward to staying up late this evening to listen to the oilers game…bummer, that might not work out.

Oh yeah, I game-casted the seahawks game yesterday. WHOO HOOO!!!!! Unbelievable.

If this post does not make sense or if there are tons of spelling errors, please forgive me, I am a bit on the tired side. Good thing I am not trying to write a paper right now.

What a lovely day!

I got to sleep in today. That was nice. Really, I woke up at about 9 which is not really sleeping in, but it was nice to not wake up to an alarm.

Then I read a bit of my book on John Brown. I have to read it for class, yet it is a fairly interesting read.

I made an awesome sandwich for lunch.

I backed up my itunes music.

I read some more of my book. Next I think I will take a nap.

One thing I wanted to mention was that on Thursday I was able to listen to the entire Oilers game. Edmonton scored first, but then gave up 4 unanswered goals to the Sharks. They got one back, but heading into the third period, it was 4-2 and Edmonton was not playing well.

THEN within 2 minutes and 1 second, my favorite, Number 94, the man I once saw at Tim Hortons after a game, Ryan Smyth, scored 3 goals. Thats right, a hat trick within 2 minutes and 1 second. He broke a previous oiler record from back in the day when Gretzky got three goals within 2 minutes and 18 seconds. So that put them ahead 5-4 and they finished the game off with one more. What a great game! I am looking forward to listening to tonight’s game against Colorado. I am envious of everyone who can watch the CBC tonight.
